Queen's Day (Koninginnedag)

Ok, this post is a moth late but no blog on Holland is complete without it. April 30th: Queen's Day, or Koninginnedag, is a big deal in Holland. It's a day of national celebration and to my sheer delight the biggest tag sale the world has ever seen. Everyone sells their stuff of the streets. There are many bargains to be had and treasure to find. It's a fabulous day.The nice things are the games, quite often children invent games to earn a buck. Mostly though kids are set up in Volndelpark. Then there's the home baking...And other handicrafts. And of course people watching. Or watching people people watching. The national colour of Holland is orange (foul) and the city turns into a throbbing sea of it.Words of warning: streets are packed so wear comfy sneakers and don't bother with a bike, this is a walking day. Get cash out the day before as ATM's will have a queue a mile long and run out pretty early on. And mobiles don't always work and sms' can be delayed through millions of people using their phones at the same time, so hatch a bit of a plan or time and meeting point with friends the day before. And if you really want a good bargain, get up early!
