The Otherist

The Otherist is you one-stop gift shop. Ok, Ok, so I mostly buy gifts there for me...but that's not the point! This wonderful treasure trove of delights have each been hand-selected by owners Joshua Walters and Steven Stoddart, men with immaculate taste and impeccable sense of style.
They have a gorgeous shop on the Lelliegracht, The Otherist, a few doors down from Smaak. Inside is all manner of curios and must-haves from books, prints, jewellery, ceramics, toys, handbags, wallets, and all manner of beautiful, rare and wacky pieces to decorate your home. They have something for everyone. Check out the latest goodies on offer on their online store and via their blog. But wait, there's more! Joshua is an artist as well (where does he find the time?!) and you can see more of his work on his blog here.I've selected two of their pieces I really really adore, to begin with: Horse Chestnut. The Otherist says "
Penkridge Ceramics' success lies in the creation of the 'real thing' when it comes to ceramic fruits. This stand-alone collection, established by Lorraine Taylor and Nicky Smart, is now considered the best in its field. All design work and production is carried out in their workshop in Walsall, in the West Midlands, UK. Their attention to detail is unmatched, each piece is individually considered, with several layers of glaze added to create both colour and texture, giving a 'super-real' effect and accuracy of finish. Each piece is an individual ceramic sculpture inspired by nature. This chestnut pod has two removable nuts. The stem is cast from pewter and also hand painted." Approx 12cm high to top of stem, €144.And this lovely Amidst Routes Letterpress Print. The Otherist says "
Titled "Amidst Routes" it is letterpress printed in echo grey and mustard ink.

Featuring botanical imagery surrounded by geometric diamond and antique lace bit-lettes. A stem of allium has grown a sprig of rosemary for roots while a tick-tocked flip-flopped bloom (a ranunculus or peony) sprouted a stem of mint

Print measures 12,7 x 17,78cm (5" x 7"). Each print is hand numbered - This is a limited edition print. Packaged with a mock giant-tag backing, making it ready for giving to someone special." They just make everything sounds as beautiful as they look, don't they? And a steal at €14,95. Detail below.Joshua and Steven are passionate about their store, and it really shows in the quality and originality of their wares. They have things I've never seen in Europe, and you know I look! So, for something a bit different, of exceptional quality, this is my Amsterdam pick. But don't take my word for it, check it out for yourselves! The Otherist: Leliegracht 6, 1015DE - Amsterdam (between Herengracht & Keizersgracht).
